How RULER helps our students name their feelings

RULER, our approach to social-emotional learning, gives students words and tools for their feelings. Two recent moments show it in action.
Ocelots and the Meta-Moment
Some of our youngest learners, the Ocelots, traveled around campus interviewing members of our village team about how they use the Meta-Moment, the RULER tool for pausing before responding. Students practiced asking thoughtful questions, listening and sharing what they were learning, and discovered how the adults around them use emotional intelligence every day. Thank you to Ms. Ellie and Ms. Kani for guiding them.
Classroom Charters
Rather than starting the year with a list of rules, our PYP and MYP students wrote Classroom Charters with Marjorie Vicente. Each class agrees on how they want to feel at school, such as safe, respected, included or calm, and what everyone can do to help. Through the year, students and teachers return to their Charter to reflect and reconnect.
From PYP through MYP, this approach builds emotional awareness, empathy, communication and a strong sense of belonging. Read more about our character-based education.
